‘MANGA HOKUSAI MANGA’: Meet the master that inspired panels and panels of art

You may not know his name, but surely you've seen his work.

Katsushika Hokusai's "The Great Wave" is one of the most recognizable works of fine art, but the artist's genius extends well beyond this iconic image.

Hokusai's pictorial compendium is often associated with the origins of contemporary "manga" or Japanese comics and the exhibit "Manga Hokusai Manga" at the Ateneo Art Gallery makes this evident for the popular literary format.

"Manga Hokusai Manga" first introduces Hokusai as an artist through his printed drawings. A clear line from can be drawn from his studies of hands and facial expressions to the art in modern manga.

Dr. Jaqueline Berndt, director of the exhibition and professor of Japanese language and culture at the Stockholm University, will be conducting a lecture titled "Exhibiting Manga: Intentions, Difficulties, and Potentials" to further explain Hokusai's influence, as well her experience in mounting the exhibit.

"Manga Hokusai Manga" additionally includes the work of several artists inspired by Hokusai, some of whom drew him as a character in their own manga. Visitors may also lounge in a reading corner, featuring a collection of manga from the Japan Foundation Library.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Japan Foundation and its partners also organized "Making Manga: Basic Manga Creative Process Workshop" (led by Tintin Pantoja of Comic School of Manila) for July 15 and a lecture by Dr. Karl Ian Uy Ceng Chua titled "Manga and the 'Manga-esqe': Shifting Definitions and Perspectives" on July 20 to further endear the public with the art of manga.

Admission to the exhibition and the succeeding events is free. "Manga Hokusai Manga" will run at the Ateneo Art Gallery from June 17 to July 28. — AT, GMA News
