What we know about ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ so far

After months of waiting, the trailer for the sequel to the 2015 sleeper hit "Kingsman: The Secret Service" (TSS) has finally been released and long-suffering fans are hit with stunning new content, from the first strains of its familiar tune until the last sting of Frank Sinatra's "My Way."

This article will be full of potential spoilers for "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" (TGC), and will analyze the two teasers previewed by Taron Egerton, who plays the lead Gary "Eggsy" Unwin, and the newest trailer.

Sacrifice over nobility

The first trailer opens with new narration from Harry Hart, the ill-fated gentleman spy that unlikely action hero Colin Firth played in the original film.

While flashing through a brief recap of Eggsy's journey so far and settling in his role as an agent, we hear a version of Harry's speech on how a Kingsman is defined not by their £1,000 bespoke suits but by their actions.

The new twist to the speech, a far cry from the Ernest Hemingway quote on true nobility, is his remark on the willingness of a Kingsman to sacrifice one's self for their duty.

Not only does it highlight Harry's sacrifice in TSS, it foreshadows the heroes' possible actions to take down the new big bad: billionaire social entrepreneur and possible Martha Stewart-expy, Poppy (Julianne Moore).

Bye-bye London, hello U.S.A.

The quote is immediately followed by the destruction of the Kingsman headquarters, the tailor shop, and Harry's home, paying off the explosions seen in teasers and leading to their eventual tie-up with Kingsman's US counterpart, Statesman.

Unlike what the previous teasers implied however, the trailer shows that the partnership was hard won as Agent Tequila (Channing Tatum) fought both Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong) in what seems to be the whiskey cellar of Statesman.

Despite the initial friction, Eggsy eventually teams up with Tequila's senior Whiskey (Pedro Pascal) to investigate a facility possibly connected to the new big villain in a ski lodge.

It also appears the bar fight that made Matthew Vaughn cast Firth into the role of Harry Hart in the first place will occur again, this time in a dingy, redneck mid-west bar—and with Whiskey packing an electric whip instead of a brolly.

Statesman's technician, Ginger (Halle Berry) and head honcho Champagne (Jeff Bridges) were also seen in the trailer, though suspected Statesman member Elton John—who is listed as having a stunt double—made no appearances.

Charlie's back and Roxy's still here (for now?)

Roxanne Morton (Sophie Cookson), who became the new Lancelot, and Eggsy's old rival and fellow Kingsman candidate Charlie Hesketh (Edward Holcroft) also made appearances in the teasers and the trailer.

Charlie, last seen being tased by Eggsy at the end of TSS, was presumed dead by fans until it was announced that Holcroft was coming back to the franchise.

In the new trailer, Charlie's without his signature foppish hair and his arm, but Poppy fits him with a new mechanical arm that takes cues from the Winter Soldier and Inspector Gadget in look and function.

Roxy's role in the movie, however, is a lot more ambiguous than Charlie's role as Poppy's top henchman as she is only seen within the UK headquarters with Kingsman's tailor.

Locations and plot details galore

Poppy's main hideout, Poppy Land, seems to be a compound in a jungle on top of a hill, built almost like an amusement park, complete with a diner, a movie theater, a bowling alley, and robot dogs.

Another scene is the result of the filming in Birmingham around March 2016—a chase scene between a Kingsman-issue black cab and machine gun-mounted cars.

The cab, proven to be the same as the cab in the chase scene by its plate number (YV13 GYR) is then seen being driven by Eggsy in an underwater tunnel in the beginning of the trailer.

Apart from the teasers and trailers, TGC's IMDB page also teases some of the locations and set pieces for the upcoming film.

Staying true to its synopsis, the story will seemingly go global again as additional actors were signed to play an Indian head of state and a royal Swedish Grenadier, while a crew was sent to Italy.

Disease and massive crowds, as implied by the snippet showing Poppy's Pharmaceuticals, will also play a role in the villain's scheme as hinted by the presence of infected patients, medical personnel, and festival goers.

The Golden Circle also seems to refer to a paramilitary outfit created by Poppy, distinguished by the golden circle branded on their skin and the designations given to the actors hired to play soldiers from the group.

Lastly, Eggsy or some other lucky character may get married, as guests both common and royal are listed in the cast. The candidates for marriage include two royals: the returning Princess Tilde (Hanna Alström) and newcomer Clara Von Gluckfberg (Poppy Delevigne).

They actually gave him an eyepatch

But the most shocking reveal—despite Firth being spotted filming for the film a year ago and subsequent hints by the actor, director Matthew Vaughn, and Egerton—is the surprise return of Harry Hart.

Now sporting an eyepatch, Harry seems to be trapped in a facility away from Kingsman and Statesman alike. But near death and imprisonment hasn't erased his fondness for being clean-shaven or for butterflies.

The butterflies scribbled on his wall may be the last remnants of his collection as they were caught in the explosion along with his beloved taxidermied dog, Mr. Pickle.

Interestingly, one of the butterflies Harry had sketched, Nymphalidae Apaturinae (emperors), could be found in the Americas.

Not even the full version yet

As informative as the teasers and trailers were, the first trailer and the teasers were just small bites from a trailer exclusively shown at CinemaCon from March 27 to March 30 earlier this year.

ComicBook.com describes the trailer:

"It starts with footage from the original, showing Eggsy learning how important it is to protect the world. Now, Eggsy is zipping down London streets, being chased by cars with gatling guns on top of them. He launches a missile which breaks into three and takes them all out. Someone is planning to take out the Kingsman. The Kingsman mansion is destroyed, as is the tailor. Eggsy is offered a drink as the answer to all their problems. The bottle says Kentucky, so they go to Kentucky where they meet Channing Tatum's character, who has a southern accent and is part of the Statesmen. Colin Firth's Harry Hart is being kept in a cell and is now sporting an eyepatch. Robotic dogs are killed. An electric lasso cuts a man in half. Back to together again, Hart and Eggsy get ready for battle. A fight ensues in a ski lift with an American flag parachute opening. Eggsy tells Tatum, “That’s very American.” To which he replies, “F--k yeah.” It’s all playing out to Elton John’s 1973 classic song “Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting.”"

Moreover, Mark Millar, Vaughn's co-conspirator for Kingsman and the writer of the original graphic novel, announced a new comic starting in September called Kingsman: The Red Diamond.
