The ‘Assumption handwriting’ is now a font
The distinctive cursive penmanship of Assumption graduates has been digitized and is now available as a typeface for your graphic design needs.
Behind the font is Assumption Antipolo alumna Mikko Sumulong, who told GMA News Online in an email interview on Wednesday that it took her a year to create "Mix Old Girl."
"Creating fonts takes lots of time and effort, especially when it’s cursive. The distinct sharp edges of my Alma Mater’s distinctive handwriting made it even more difficult," Sumulong revealed.
The unique handwriting, as far as she knows, can be linked back to Penmanship class.
"We were taught how to write cursive this way. We spent one class period each week perfecting those sharp strokes. I’m not sure if the same holds true today," she explained. "I actually had no clue that our writing was 'special' until people not from my school would ask me why I wrote the way I did.
Sumulong said the distinguishing features are found in the letters A, S, and the "classic capital T."
"This way of writing is held in high regard. I did not want to disappoint," she said.
She has been making fonts for several years now, but says she "never got around to making an Assumption Script font" even though she frequently gets requests from titas, cousins, and former classmates.
"I’ve gotten more and more request in the last couple years. I usually hear from Assumption Alumnae around Assumption Day (August 15) and Assumption San Lorenzo’s Velada season (October)," she said.
She officially released "Mix Old Girl" this Wednesday and despite it being the start of Holy Week, the font met positive reactions.
"I launched the font today, and it’s been viewed thousands of times already. The shares, likes and comments on Facebook is quite overwhelming—and honestly, humbling," Sumulong said.
The font is available in Sumulong's website, MixFonts.xyz, for $13 (personal, educational, or non-profit use) or $29 (commercial use). —JST, GMA News
