The CW’s Flash, Supergirl to sing in special musical episode

The CW’s Flash and Supergirl have met onscreen before, but never in an episode like this.

That’s right, Flash and Supergirl will be singing in a special episode of “The Flash.” The network has released its official description, and that of the “Supergirl” episode that leads up to it.

Episode 16 of season 2 of “Supergirl,” entitled “Star-Crossed,” has Supergirl confronting new villains, including the Music Meister. The episode description reads:

“A new villain (guest star Teri Hatcher) comes to National City, putting Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) on high alert. Meanwhile, Winn’s (Jeremy Jordan) girlfriend, Lyra (guest star Tamzin Merchant), gets Winn in trouble with the law. Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) attempts to help Winn but old loyalties get in the way. The Music Meister (Darren Criss) attacks Supergirl.”

The episode will air on the CW on March 20.

The story continues in “The Flash” season 3, episode 17, scheduled for March 21. This will be the musical episode, and it’s called “Duet.” The episode description is as follows:

“Barry (Grant Gustin) and team are surprised when Mon-El (guest star Chris Wood) and Hank Henshaw (guest star David Harewood) arrive on their Earth carrying a comatose Supergirl (guest star Melissa Benoist) who was whammied by the Music Meister (guest star Darren Criss). Unable to wake her up, they turn to Team Flash to save her. However, the Music Meister surprises The Flash and puts him in a similar coma, one that Team Flash can’t cure. Kara and Barry wake up without their powers in an alternate reality where life is like a musical and the only way to escape is by following the script, complete with singing and dancing, to the end.”

The musical episode was directed by Dermott Downs. Its story was written by Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti, with Todd and Aaron Helbing behind the teleplay.

One of the songs was written by Rachel Bloom, who created and stars in “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” The song, “Super Friends,” will be performed by Benoist and Gustin—who, along with guest star Criss, were all on Ryan Murphy’s high school musical series “Glee.”

Gustin will also be performing a song called “Runnin’ Home to You,” which was written by the songwriting duo of Justin Paul and Benj Pasek.

The musical episode isn’t a new phenomenon. Various non-musical TV shows—such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Simpsons,” “Xena: The Warrior Princess,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Ally McBeal,” “That ‘70s Show,” “Scrubs,” “Community,” and “South Park”—have featured such episodes.

The Music Meister first appeared in the animated TV series “Batman: The Brave and the Bold.” In the episode “Mayhem of the Music Meister!,” he was voiced by Neil Patrick Harris. — BM, GMA News
