Marvel reveals ‘Avengers’ anime, manga incoming

In a surprising announcement, Marvel revealed that an “Avengers” anime series and a manga are in the works.

The anime series for television is called “Marvel Future Avengers,” and revolves around Makoto, a young boy who gains superpowers after being subjected to an experiment that alters his genes. He teams up with other youths boasting unusual abilities, and together become part of the original Avengers team.

As the “Future Avengers,” the kids will serve as apprentices to the likes of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Wasp. Though curiously absent from the promotional material, it’s not impossible that the show will eventually feature other popular Avengers such as Black Widow, Hawkeye, Vision, and Scarlet Witch.

As they train under the Avengers, the Future Avengers will also battle villains, so it’s not unlikely we’ll see Loki and other Marvel bad guys in the show.

In addition to the anime, we’ll be getting a manga drawn by Teruaki Mizuno, who’s known for his work on “Kyoryu Taisen Dinobout” and “Metalica Metaluca.” This coming Tuesday, the manga will appear in Shogakukan’s April issue of “Bessatsu Coro Coro Comics Special.”

Both anime and manga will cater to young audiences.

This isn’t the first collaboration between Marvel and a Japanese studio. Marvel previously worked with Madhouse to create “X-Men,” “Wolverine,” “Iron Man,” and “Blade” anime series for television—all of which in 2012 got DVD releases in North America through Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. They also created the 2013 OAV “Iron Man: Rise of Technovore,” and the 2014 animated film “Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher.”
