NASA’s female math whizzes of color emerge from shadows in ‘Hidden Figures’
Movies based on actual historical events usually take liberties in presenting what actually happened, but 20th Century Fox and director Theodore Melfi’s Oscar-nominated film “Hidden Figures” goes above and beyond—and presents something factual and special with a lot of heart behind it.
"Hidden Figures" tells the story of three African American women who all worked for NASA during the space race in the 60’s. Actresses Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae give their very best performances as real-life mathematicians Katherine Goble Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson—who overcame racial prejudices to contribute to the success of Project Mercury and other missions.
It’s an emotional ride, offering a look at what happens behind the scenes to get the astronauts to embark on their outer space adventures. With Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, and Jim Parsons co-starring as authority figures in the NASA office, the three main African-American actresses shine like the bright stars they are in this movie.
Highly recommended and definitely worthy to be a top contender for Best Picture at this year’s upcoming Academy Awards.
