Giant-parol lighting opens Intramuros' Christmas attractions

The Filipino Christmas spirit sparked to life in Intramuros, Manila Tuesday evening with the launch of "Pasko sa Intramuros".

The walled city has been specially prepped for the holiday festivities, from the giant parol in Plaza Roma to a Christmas bazaar showcasing the Philippines' attractions.

Senator Richard Gordon, Senator Nancy Binay, and Department of Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo were present for the launch of "Pasko", giving the children of Intramuros early Christmas presents, and lighting the giant San Fernando, Pampanga-made parol.

They also cut the ribbon for the Christmas bazaar on Postigo Street, which features products from every region of the country.

Teo said that the DOT planned on making "Pasko sa Intramuros" a tradition. "This will be yearly. We will even be improving this. We would like to focus on improving Intramuros," she explained.

"Pasko sa Intramuros" will run until January 31, 2017.

Miss Universe

DOT Assistant Secretary Ricky Alegre meanwhile said that Intramuros was revived, not only for tourists, but especially the candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant who will be arriving in the country on Dec. 9.

Prior to the coronation night on January 30, 2017, 11 of the candidates will be touring various cities, including Intramuros.

Alegre added that what the DOT specially wanted to present to the world was the spirit of the Filipino people, which remains to be the country's best asset.

"Ang pinakamalaking asset, and pinakamalaking tourist boost natin ay ang Filipino," he emphasized. — DVM, GMA News
