The official children's choir of the University of the Philippines is celebrating its 45th anniversary by restaging a play about the need to protect the environment.

Award-winning group Cherubim and Seraphim's production of “Awit ni Pulau” will be performed at the UP Theatre Stage in the university's Diliman campus on July 15, 16 and 17.

Written by playwright and poet Edgardo Maranan, with music by National Artist Ramon Santos, “Awit ni Pulau” is "a cautionary tale about man’s role in environmental destruction," the choir said in a press release. Running through the play is its message that Nature must be respected and protected in the face of man's greed runs through the story.

The choir, whose current singers range in age from 8 to 17 years old, has long been an advocate of the creation of original Filipino musical works for children. It commissioned "Awit ni Pulau" back in 1990, and first staged it in 1991 for its 20th anniversary. — BM, GMA News
