Catch free movies at UP Diliman during Arts and Culture Month
The University of the Philippines' Diliman campus is celebrating the arts and culture month by highlighting the works of four national artists: Lamberto Avellana, Manuel Conde, Severino Montao, and Nestor Vicente Madali Gonzalez.
In celebration of Avellana and Conde's contributions to film, their films will be screened for free for the public at the College of Mass Communications (CMC) and College of Architecture.
Catch Conde's "Señorito" on February 3 and "Genghis Khan" on February 4, 7 p.m. at the Dap-ay of the CMC.
"Señorito" (1953) follows the story of a man who hires a woman to charm his son and temper his wild ways. Unfortunately, the woman and his son fall in love—which he explicitly forbade.
"Genghis Khan" (1950) recounts the life of the titular character. The film was screened in the 1952 Venice Film Festival and is widely regarded as a classic, earning praise for its technical achievements.
Meanwhile, Avellana's "Badjao" and "Portrait of an Artist as Filipino" will be screened at the College of Architecture auditorium at 7 p.m. on February 10 and 11 respectively.
"Badjao" (1957) is regarded as "the first intelligent movie to depict a minority group's traditional customs." It depicts the conflict between the Badjao and the Moro, framed by the marriage of two people from opposing sides.
"A Portrait of The Artist as Filipino" (1965) is based on the work of another National Artist, Nick Joaquin, sharing the story of the Marasigan sisters facing the challenges of life in 1941 Philippines.
Aside from film screenings, various groups in UP Diliman have organized concerts, theater productions, and lectures for the arts and culture month.
