Why Pia Wurtzbach’s mom skipped the Miss Universe competition

Cheryl Alonzo was a no-show when her daugher, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, was crowned Miss Universe 2015 in Las Vegas, USA.

A report by GMA News' Aubrey Carampel on News To Go Friday quoted Cheryl as saying that she deliberately skipped the beauty pageant because of her high blood pressure.

"Kaya hindi ako nagpunta sa Las Vegas kasi baka ma-highblood ako doon. Ito na nga, hindi ko ma-judge yung host kasi right there and then, nag-apologize siya," she said.

Cheryl was referring to the mix-up in the announcement of winners after host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner instead of Wurtzbach.

Wurtzbach's sister, Sarah, meanwhile, watched the show live at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

"Biglang nakita namin may nagkakagulo sa backstage, lumabas si Steve at nag-apologize agad. Talagang 'Oh my God!' sobrang happy namin, umiiyak kami," said Sarah.

Cheryl said she felt proud for her daughter, who had finally fulfilled her dream of becoming a beauty queen.

"Siyempre, tuwang tuwa; over the moon talaga. At last, natupad na 'yung mga pangarap niya," she shared.

Being an avid fan of beauty contests, she said she influenced her daughter's love for joining pageants.

"Nakikipanood siya so later on, sinusuot na niya yung high heels ko so sabi ko 'sige, lakad ka dun' tapos balik siya, tapos tatanungin ko siya, 'what is the essence of a woman?'" said Cheryl.

After her coronation, Cheryl said Wurtzbach sent her a text message, saying: "Ma, oh my God, Miss Universe na yung baby mo."

The news report also showed Wurtzbach's recorded video still wearing her blue evening gown and Miss Universe crown, as she thanked her fans who supported her journey.

"Hi, mga Pianatics. It's me Miss Universe, Pia Alonzo from the Philippines. Panalo na tayo, finally. Thank you so much sa lahat ng support niyo and I can't wait to see you guys. Thank you!"
