The designer behind Miss Colombia’s national costume is...

For her national costume at the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant, Miss Colombia Ariadna María Gutiérrez Arévalo wore a colorful gown inspired by butterflies and the Jardín Botánico de Colombia designed by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza. He also designed the shimmery silver evening gown she wore that night.

If the name is familiar to you, it's because Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc.'s Colombian-born chairperson Stella Marquez Araneta had tapped Barraza to design the gowns for Miss Philippines-Universe as early as 2001.

Some of them received good reviews, but others—especially the recent ones—were not as well received, in particular the national costume he designed for the previous Miss Philippines, MJ Lastimosa.

The dress was widely panned by netizens, who described it as looking like a cake, and even blamed it on Lastimosa's failing to make it past the Top 10.

Colombian bet Paulina Vega, who also wore a Barraza design, was eventually crowned Miss Universe.

The result was a strong call for Araneta and the Binibining Pilipinas Organization to tap Filipino designers to create gowns for the country's representative.

The organizers heeded the call and turned to Filipino designer Albert Andrada to design Pia Wurtzbach's gowns. She was crowned Miss Universe on Monday (Philippine time), with Colombia as first runner-up after a controversial gaffe by host Steve Harvey in which he declared Gutierrez the winner. — Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News
