Angono artists explore hand-painted art in the sartorial world
Some young artists in Angono, Rizal are painting masterpieces—with dresses and other pieces of clothing as their canvases.
This is the advocacy of a group of young artists who received help from the Department of Education and non-profit organization Bike for the Philippines to go back to school. Hand-painting wearable creations is part of their extension class.
Creating "wearable cultural fashion" is no easy feat. The artists have to first complete their work on paper, just like any other fashion designers. Then they draw sketches of their designs before executing them.
"Parang katulad din siya sa canvas. Kailangan po ng disiplina, ganda, at ayos sa pagpipinta sa subject natin," Angono artist David Rizalte said in a report on GMA News TV's Balitanghali on Monday.
Most of the themes touch on local folklore as well as Filipino culture and values.
Their hand-painted baro't saya and barong Tagalongs have been featured in fiestas, parades, and local competitions. Each creation can go for as much as P10,000.
"Talagang nagpapasadya sila ng canvas na tela or iyong malapit sa canvas para maganda ang kapit ng pintura sa disenyo," their arts teacher Orville Tiamson said.
Since their works don't have to be displayed in one location, the artists have a greater chance to show and share their art.
"Sa pamamagitan ng pagpipinta nila, napapakita nila into fashion iyong design," Tiamson said.
"Maraming makaka-appreciate bata man o matanda kasi mobile siya eh," artist Kazuyuki Motoda added. — Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News
