Cory Aquino’s floral paintings on PHL stamps anew

The Philippine Postal Corporation launched Wednesday the second series of special scented stamps featuring the colorful floral paintings of former President Corazon C. Aquino.

Postmaster General Josie Dela Cruz said the special stamps were printed to mark the sixth death anniversary of Aquino, an icon of democracy.

Aquino's daughters Ballsy Aquino-Cruz and Pinky Aquino-Abella attended the event held at the Hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza. The paintings featured in the stamps were favorites of Ballsy and Pinky from their very own collections.

Aquino painted flowers and gave them as gifts to relatives, friends and even foreign leaders like the Sultan of Brunei.

She also sold some of her artworks to support various charitable institutions.

"She may have been gone but her memories will forever remain in the hearts of the Filipinos, and we, at PHLPost, would like to immortalize her passion for painting by issuing another set of special scented postage stamps to feature her colorful floral artwork," Dela Cruz said.

Starting August 1, the stamps will be sold at post offices nationwide at P30 each while a souvenir sheet will cost P120 each.

Dela Cruz said special stamps bring in additional revenue for PHLPost, a government-owned and -controlled corporation.

She added that Cory Aquino stamps were among their bestsellers because the former President has a following not just in the Philippines but also abroad.

Dela Cruz added that Cory Aquino has the rare distinction of being the only Philippine President who has been featured on Philippine stamps eleven times.

The event was attended by some friends of Aquino.

Among them were Philippine Economic Zone Authority Director General Lilia De Lima who was also a "classmate" of the former President in painting classes, and Deedee Sytangco, former spokesperson of Aquino. —KG, GMA News
