These Pangasinan youths get first taste of Pabasa tradition

This week children and youths in Pangasinan got their first taste of the Pabasa, a Holy Week tradition where worshipers chant about the Passion of Jesus Christ.

Since Monday, devotees gathered at Barangay Umando in Malasiqui town to take part in the tradition, GMA Dagupan's Hazel Cawaing reported Tuesday.

"Ito yung kapurihan ng Diyos at para sa Kristyano, mga ginawa nilang sacrifices," said devotee Ron Tamayo, who hosted the tradition at his house.

He added this is his way of giving thanks for the blessings he got from God. "I want to give it back," he said.

The devotees did not mind having to sustain their activity though the night.

"Umiinom kami ng mainit para hindi matuyo ang lalamunan," said devotee Irenea Agang.

Some children joined the Pabasa and some found it a bit difficult—but they didn't mind, saying they did it for God.

"Konti lang," said Jimson Garcia, when asked if he had difficulty joining the Pabasa.

Another youth, Mark, said it was his first time to take part in a Pabasa. When asked what he thought about it, he said, "Masaya po."

The Pabasa will last until Good Friday, when Christians commemorate Christ's death.

Surip pilgrimage site

Meanwhile, the Alaminos City archdiocese brought 21 youths to Bani town to visit the Surip pilgrimage site.

Participants are to spend three days listening to God's word.

"Maganda itong place, tapos tahimik. Tapos dapat maging silence para maisip ang sarili at ibang tao," said Mike Caoile, a youth from Labrador town.

"Dito namin naano yung relasyon namin sa Diyos, tapos nagkakaroon kami ng reflection, kung ano man yung nangyari kay Kristo," youth leader Jeofrey added. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
