GSIS art competition winners announced

The winners of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Art Competition were announced last month at the at the GSIS Theater in Pasay City, according to a press release from the state-run government workers' pension fund.

The competition introduced a new category for its 10th year: mixed media or the use of objects with traditional artist media, in addition to the non-representational category and the sculpture category.

The winners for each category are:

Non-representational category
  • First place: Gary Custodio of Kalibo, Aklan, for “Done, Redo, Redone, Done…”
  • Second place: Leopoldo Aguilar Jr. of Pasig City for “New Landscape”
  • Third place: Benjamin F. Cruz of Calamba, Laguna for “Life and Beauty”

Sculpture
  • First place: Roman Angelo R. Cruz of Angeles City, Pampanga for “Essence of a Woman”
  • Second place: Pete Jimenez Jr. of Quezon City for “Pusong Gubat, Galing sa Ugat”
  • Third place: Jerry R. Morada of Siniloan, Laguna for “Water Fuel”

Mixed media
  • First place: Sam Penaso of Quezon City for “Nosebleed”
  • Second place: Emmanuel John Santos of Caloocan City for “Remember Me”
  • Third place: Arthur D. Lozano of Baguio City for “Kalawang na Syudad”
The winners' works can be seen here. The first-place winners each took home P300,000, while the second-place and third-place winners received P200,000 and P100,000 respectively.

There were also 13 honorable mentions—three in the sculpture category and five each in the other categories—receiving P20,000 each.

The winning entries will become part of the GSIS collection. They may also be viewed at the GSIS Museum until July 25. — BM, GMA News
