Art Fair Philippines is now open to the public

A small crowd of collectors and other art enthusiasts gather at the Secret Fresh booth on opening night.
The second Art Fair Philippines is now open to the public. The four-day event, which runs until Sunday, features most of Manila’s major commercial art galleries and spaces, plus two foreign galleries and the Hong Kong branch of Christie’s auction house.

The fair occupies a floor and a half of the Link parking building at Ayala Center Makati.

Apart from the selections from the participating galleries are special solo exhibitions by Marina Cruz, Bencab, Rodel Tapaya, Ronald Ventura, Pio Abad, Jose John Santos III, and Louie Cordero.

Cordero’s exhibition, though, is not just for display. “Trickie [Lopa, one of Art Fair Philippines’ organizers] approached me to do a work for the fair,” Cordero told GMA News Online during the preview and opening reception Wednesday night, “and it was challenging, because she gave me the biggest space.”

Cordero originally had in mind a children’s playground, but after some discussion, he decided to put up ping-pong tables based on his sculptural style—and set up a tournament at the festival. “I play ping-pong with my friends, and I played with my father and my family when I was younger,” he said, “It was mostly casual.”

Artist Louie Cordero (left) plays ping-pong on one of the tables with GMA News reporter Jay Taruc.

Cordero said that he incorporated what he had been doing for the past few years into the design of the table, which for him allows for a different (and more challenging) style of play. He added that, after the festival, the base of each table could be hung on a wall and the legs could serve as sculptural pieces.

But for him, the key was interaction: “When you go to an [art fair], you just go and see art and then go home. Why can’t it be possible to converse or connect with a sculpture or painting literally?” The ping-pong tournament takes place on Saturday and Sunday, and registration is free for all who are at the Art Fair.

Apart from the ping-pong tournament and the various art on offer, the Museum Foundation of the Philippines is organizing tours of the Art Fair and of other artistic institutions throughout Metro Manila, and Christie’s is sponsoring a series of talks on the Philippine and Asian art scenes every day of the fair. — BM, GMA News
