Five short films from Zamboanga City—shot in the local language, Chabacano—will be screened on Wednesday and Thursday as part of Película-Pelikula, the 12th Spanish Film Festival, which is running at Ayala Greenbelt 3 cinemas until Oct. 13.

Jose Maria Fons, senior cultural officer of the Instituto Cervantes de Manila, said Dexter de la Peña is curating the “Noches Chabacanos,” which will feature "El Rezo di Maria Ressa" by Aedrian Araojo, "El Sentimento del Maga Quieto" and "Marital Status" by Joseph Vincent Suarez, "Retrato" by Mark Lee, and "Mientras su Durmida" by Sheron Dayoc. The films will be shown on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. and on Oct. 10 at 4:30 p.m. at Cinema 1.

Started in 2002, the annual Película-Pelikula is considered the biggest and grandest celebration of Spanish and Latin American cinema in the Asia-Pacific region. Last year’s edition showcased nine of the best of Basque short films through the innovative “Cortos Vascos” section.

Spanish ambassador Jorge Domecq said this year's festival emphasizes the noticeable creative output of filmmakers from Zamboanga City during the last several years.

“I hope the situation [the recent attack on the city] will not harm the heritage of the Zamboanga City and the work of the filmmakers there,” he told reporters.

Carlos Palomo, officer-in-charge of the Instituto Cervantes de Manila, said the unprecedented inclusion of Chabacano films in the festival is meant to illustrate vividly the common history of the Philippines and Spain.

“The Chabacano language is the only Spanish-based creole in Asia. It has survived for more than 400 years, making it one of the oldest creole languages in the world and becoming the best witness of the common past between the Philippine and Spain,” he said.

Another film by a Filipino director, “La Última Película” by Raya Martin, will be shown on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.

Encuentros

Domecq said what separates the annual Spanish film festival from the numerous foreign film festivals in the Philippines is the “encuentros en el cine,” where the audience has the opportunity to meet the filmmakers and discuss their films.

On Oct. 7 at 7 p.m., Argentinian director Gabriel Nesci will introduce his film feature “Días de Vinilo” as the highlight of the “Noche del Cine Argentino” in cooperation with the Embassy of Argentina in the Philippines.

The Argentinian director will hold a cinema workshop at the School of Arts of St. Benilde-Dela Salle University on Oct. 8 at 10:30 a.m., the ambassador added.

Vertical dance troupe Sacude will perform at Greenbelt on Friday.

Domecq said the Spanish and Latin American films in this year’s selection include Pablo Berger’s “Blancanieves,” the main winner of the 2013 Goya Awards.

He said the rest of the line-up shows genres ranging from romance and comedies (“Promoción Fantasma”) to suspense or drama (“El Artista y la Modelo”), animation (“Copito de Nieve” and “O Apostolo”), musical (“Dias de Vinilo”), documentary (“Colgados de un Sueño”) action (“Samurai”), and science fiction (“Extraterrestre”).

“Blancanieves” garnered the top honors at the February 2013 Spanish Film Academy's Goya Awards, including Best Film, Best Actress for Maribel Verdu, and Best New Actress for Macarena Garcia, and Best Original Screenplay for Berger.

“Blancanieves,” Spain’s black-and-white tribute to silent cinema, is the Spanish reinvention of the Snow White story, set in Seville in the 1920s.

Spanish actress Alejandra Lorente graced the showing of her short film “Aquel No Era Yo,” which won the Best Fictional Short Film, also at the 2013 Spanish Film Academy's Goya Awards.

Among the documentaries is the “Colgados de un Sueño,” a film on the time painter Fernando Zobel spent in Spain, which will be of special interest for the Filipino moviegoers, Domecq said.

The ambassador said numerous events featuring international performers will also usher in the commemoration of Spanish National Day on Oct. 12 such as a performance by Sacude, a Spanish "vertical dance" company to be held at the Fashion Walk of Greenbelt 5, on Oct. 11 at 8 p.m. — BM, GMA News
