Happy... Conyo Day?

(Updated 3:07 p.m., Aug. 22) - Yaya, today pala is Conyo Day! It's so hirap to write like this, but this is how people have started talking on Twitter today. Why kaya? Is it kasi long weekend? How shunga naman! If any of the above makes sense to you, then you just might be a conyo. "Conyo" is derived from the Spanish word coño, a vulgar term for the female genitalia, but in Pinoy slang refers to someone from a well-off background, perhaps from certain schools, reeking of privilege. And anyone who's grown up with or around conyos will know one when they see one — or hear them speak. But conyo is not just the way they talk, or the phrases they use, or the sound of their voice. Conyo is a way of being. And Conyo Day will creep up on you without you noticing it. "So, that's the reason why I started speaking in english a while ago. But, it's so mahirap ah," griped @CarmelaAbad, while ‏@WhatupJonah seemed to be on the road when conyo-ness hit him: "Manong, at the corner, para!!!" As of this moment, #Happy ConyoDay is trending worldwide. The hashtag #HappyConyoDay is generating responses faster than you can make kuha a good quote. It's so magulo!
