What is the 'of course' trend on TikTok?
What is the "of course trend," is the latest thing to go viral on the internet?
The premise of the "of course" trend is simple: all you have to do is film yourself saying the word "I'm a," to introduce yourself, followed by the word "of course" to describe yourself, and you are all set now!
"I'm a call center agent, of course lagi akong walang boses," one netizen said.
According to sociologist Ash Presto, the "of course" trend is used to introduce yourself and tell something about your life, profession, or anything related to you, but in the most creative way!
What makes this trend funnier and wittier is the punchline you will use right after you introduce yourself that is either funny, a hugot, or your stand on certain political issues.
"Nakakatawa siya on one hand a good way of highlighting existing inequalities in a very indirect and non-aggressive manner, which is of course very Filipino," Presto said in Dano Tingcungco's "24 Oras Weekend" report on Sunday.
"But ang downside niyan, it crystallizes different stereotypes and also normalizes existing power dynamics, kasi pinagtatawanan mo na lang siya at pino-post mo na lang siya, 'di mo na siya kino-contest," she added.
It's not clear how this trend will transform in the next days or weeks but for Presto, what matters is the manner you present the video.
"I think it's important na at the end of the day, after you present the video may kasamang questioning, or sense-making 'yung video mo," Presto said.
