Woman finds egg inside another egg in Palawan
We've seen an egg with two yolks, but have you ever found an egg inside another egg?
This is what happened to Rai from Bataraza, Palawan, who posted about it online.
In Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras," Tuesday, Rai Ahmad said she was about to cook a scrambled egg when she got the surprise of her life.
"Pagkabiyak ko po ng itlog may kasama palang maliit na itlog," she said. "Itlog din po talaga siya kumbaga buo. May shell din. Pero maliit lang."
According to Kuya Kim, the process that leads to the formation of an egg within an egg is counter-peristalsis contraction.
This is what happens with a second oocyte (egg cell) gets released by the ovary before the hen can lay the first egg.
"'Yung naunang egg ay bumalik and then eventually na-engulf siya nitong pangalawang egg," said Dr. Aris Miclat, a veterinarian. "This usually happens kapag nase-stress o nagugulat itong ating mga chickens while they are laying their eggs."
"Puwede rin itong maging indication ng impending diseases," he added.
An egg within an egg is sterile and cannot hatch.
"They could not usually progress into a normal egg or into a normal chick kasi 'yun nga ito ay isang abnormal ovulation," Miclat said.
Meanwhile, eggs with double yolks are more common—around one in a thousand eggs has two yolks, which are believed to be a sign of luck.
These eggs are usually lain by young hens which do not have a fully developed reproductive system or old hens nearing the end of their egg-producing age.
