Teacher from Misamis Occidental goes viral after using song and dance in lessons
A teacher from Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental has gone viral after posting videos of his performance-level class lectures.
As seen in Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras," Thursday, Teacher Jeric Maribao engage his students in his lessons using song and dance.
"As a teacher, we have to be very versatile. Dapat maka-connect kaagad tayo sa ating mga learners. Generations right now are very fond of singing," he said.
"Mayroong detail of discussion na dapat maintindihan nila. Pagkatapos, mayroon nang enrichment activity through singing the lesson."
So how does song and dance help his students remember his lessons?
"Our brain creates new memories when connections between neurons are formed. Sa pamamagitan ng repetition, itong connections na to it can get stronger," said Pamela Perello, a psychologist.
"'Yung idea ng songs, ang cue natin dito is the melody. Ilalapat mo 'yong information doon sa familiar melody."
Another way of helping retain information more easily is to use mnemonic devices. An example of this is ROYGBIV and PEMDAS, which are used to memorize the colors of the rainbow and the order of operations in math.
"Makakatulong iyon na maging possible 'yong pag-alala natin ng larger amount of information," Perello said.
According to Rolando Llanda, the school head, Teacher Jeric's strategy helped minimize absenteeism because students are excited to attend class.
Teacher Jeric also said one of his students encouraged him to post their lectures on social media so his students can review it at home.
He also uses the income from his channel to share food to his students.
"Useless 'yung mga strategies kapag walang laman ang tiyan," he said.
