This 74-year-old lola has been driving a jeep in Valenzuela for 25 years
A grandmother has been driving a passenger jeepney in Valenzuela for 25 years, and she is still at it at 74 years old!
According to Mark Salazar's report on "24 Oras," Wednesday, Normina Macatiag drives the Monumento to Karuhatan route, which takes over two hours for a round trip.
Lola Normina said she inherited the job from her father.
"Nung bata pa kami may apat kaming jeep na pampasahero. Tatay ko namamahala, nagmemekaniko rin siya. Sa aming magkakapatid ako lang nahilig mag-drive ng jeepney," she said.
Mommy Mimi, as she known, has earned the admiration of many for her driving skills.
"Ang galing nga po mag-drive e," said one of her passengers. "Hindi ko po na-realize na babae pala."
Mommy Mimi earns around P500 for a one round trip, but these days, she can only handle one or two trips. Due to her advanced age, she is taking maintenance medicine for high blood pressure and diabetes.
She has two children, but she does not wish to retire and completely rely on them.
"Mahirap kasi umasa may pamilya sila may mga bata. Makiki bahagi pa ba ako doon. Eh kung kaya ko pa naman sige banat," she said.
Aside from supporting herself, Mommy Mimi is also driving to send two grandchildren of one of her siblings. The kids are orphans.
"'Yun siguro ang misyon ko sa buhay tumulong. Tinulungan ko noon ang mga kapatid ko, ngayon naman mga apo ko naman kung sino ang nangangailangan," she said.
"Sila nga nagbibigay lakas sa 'kin eh, ng sigla, ng inspirasyon para mag-survive pa."
