Palawan stink badger wanders into residential area in Puerto Prinsesa
A woman in Puerto Princesa City got acquainted with the Palawan stink badger or pantot after smelling a foul odor at her home for several days.
According to Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras" on Thursday, the culprit behind the nasty scent was discovered after the animal wandered inside the woman's sari-sari store.
The woman, Noelle Murillo, posted a video of the animal on social media. In the clip, it can be seen that it has a black body and a white head.
The Palawan stink badger is part of the animal species Mephitidae. Just to give you an idea, a skunk is another animal that falls under this category.
The pantot has anal scent glands that emit a smelly, yellow liquid. It has the volatile compounds, thiols and thioacetate, which both have sulfur. Sulfur can be responsible for other bad smells, like the smell of rotten eggs. Yuck, right?
Worse yet, the smell from the animal can reach as far as one mile. If you smell it, don't worry, because as per Kuya Kim, it takes 10-12 days before the pantot can release the same smell again. Whew!
If you see one, Glenn Rebong, a wildlife veterinarian at the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, advises to pave the way so that the animal can leave the area. He also recommends reporting the sighting to the nearest branch of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
