Fans cheer as Scooby-Doo's Velma is openly a member of the LGBTQ+ community in new film

Velma from "Scooby-Doo" is the subject of the internet for a really awesome reason.

After years of fan theories and fighting for their favorite character, Velma Dinkley is finally confirmed to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community in the newly-released animated film “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!”

One of the clips that went viral shows Velma getting stunned by a female character, convicted felon Coco Diablo,. She blushed and said her catchphrase, “Jinkies!”

In another, Velma admits, “Okay, who am I kidding? I’m crushing big time, Daphne! What do I do? What do I say?”

Additionally, if you do a quick Google search of “Velma,” LGBTQ+ flags will burst into the screen.

Fans are thrilled that Velma’s sexuality has been validated and that it is openly discussed and portrayed.

Velma being queer has long been the subject of fan discussion and has been an open secret. In fact, filmmakers have been wanting to portray her as a lesbian or bisexual.

James Gunn, who directed the 2001 live-action “Scooby-Doo” film and its 2004 sequel tweeted in 2020: “In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down [and] watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) [and] finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

Tony Servone, who produced various projects for the franchise, said on Instagram that they intended for Velma’s relationship with a character named Marcie to be romantic.
