Miss Universe candidates in hot water for allegedly making fun of non-English speaking contestants

Netizens, of course, are generally not pleased.

A video showing three Miss Universe candidates — Miss USA, Miss Colombia, and Miss Australia — talking about fellow candidates who couldn’t speak English surfaced on the Internet this week.

In the video, which came from a recent Instagram Live session of Miss Colombia Valeria Morales, Miss USA Sarah Rose Summer is shown to ask Miss Australia Frances Hung and Miss Colombia about what they thought of Miss Vietnam H'Hen Nie.

“Oh my God, she’s so cute,” Miss Australia immediately said to which Miss Colombia replied, “fashion.”

Miss USA then said, “She’s so cute and she pretends to know so much English, and you ask her a question and after having a whole English conversation with her, she goes —” and then she proceeds to mimic what is presumably Miss Vietnam’s smile. And then she laughed.

“She’s adorable,” she adds, after doing the same smiling face again.

In the next clip, Miss USA talked about Miss Cambodia Rern Nat, saying, “Miss Cambodia is here but she doesn’t speak any English, and not a single other person speaks her language. Can you imagine?”

Miss USA turned to Miss Colombia and said, “You at least speak pretty good English,” before Miss Australia piped in, “and you have your Spanish.”

Miss Colombia then mentioned how fellow Latino Miss Brazil also couldn’t speak English, but Miss USA mentioned how “there are other women who speak Portuguese.”

After Miss Australia acknowledged how hard the situation must be, Miss USA then says, “Poor Cambodia.”

At least two Instagram accounts have uploaded the video: Grand Slam Beauty Queen Alliance, where it has generated over 5,000 views and more than 100 comments, which mostly condemned the candidates.

"How did this even happened, why?" read the accompanying caption of Grand Slam Beauty Queen Alliance post.

Diet Prada, meanwhile, zeroed in on Miss USA and said, "Sarah Rose Summers hopefully will prove that ignorance will not win you a Miss Universe title...whatever that means these days. This is basically what normalized xenophobia looks like. If she’s trying to show empathy, the condescending, intolerant tone tells a different story."

On Diet Prada the video has been viewed more than 9,000 times and has more than 1,000 comments as of writing.

Regina George, is that you? This is basically like the most dramatic reality show, but condensed into 1 minute lol. @sarahrosesummers hopefully will prove that ignorance will not win you a @missuniverse title...whatever that means these days. This is basically what normalized xenophobia looks like. If she’s trying to show empathy, the condescending, intolerant tone tells a different story. A reminder that you’re participating in a competition in a country/continent where English is NOT the primary language. A search on YouTube reveals the video of the three has also already been uploaded there, where comments were equally critical of the three.

Here's hoping clarifications be issued soon. — LA, GMA News
