Wentworth Miller details battle vs. depression, suicide after meme circulates

After spotting an Internet meme that noted his weight gain, actor Wentworth Miller shared the story behind the image: a battle against depression and suicide.

Miller, known for his roles in "Prison Break" and "Underworld," wrote a long post in his Facebook page, and posted a screengrab of the meme shared by The LAD Bible.

In the post, Miller said that of all the memes he was featured in, the one that poked fun at his figure in 2010 stood out because that was the year his struggle with his mental health issues was at its worst.

"In 2010, at the lowest point in my adult life, I was looking everywhere for relief/comfort/distraction. And I turned to food. It could have been anything. Drugs. Alcohol. Sex. But eating became the one thing I could look forward to. Count on to get me through," he narrated.

The paparazzi was able to snap a photo of him after he inevitably put on weight while he was out on a hike.

He said that at the time, the body-shaming was nearly enough to push him over the edge, but he got through it. "Long story short, I survived. So do those pictures," Miller said.

The 43-year-old actor shared that he was glad that the photo was still around because it reminded him of his strength and persistence, which allowed him to overcome his illness.

"The first time I saw this meme pop up in my social media feed, I have to admit, it hurt to breathe. But as with everything in life, I get to assign meaning. And the meaning I assign to this/my image is Strength. Healing. Forgiveness. Of myself and others," he wrote.

Miller ended his post by urging those who are also struggling with depression to reach out for help, listing down suicide prevention websites.

Nearly 12 hours after posting it, his status got more than 289,000 likes and more than 80,000 shares.
