The Internet Goes Wild
DiCaprio winning an Oscar for the first time felt like a victory for everyone.
According to data from Twitter, Leo’s win set a record for the most tweeted minute of an Oscars telecast ever, generating a peak of 440,000 tweets per minute. It beats the previous record of 255,000 tweets per minute, set when Ellen DeGeneres posted the now famous Oscars selfie.
In another analysis using Radian6, a powerful social listening tool under the SalesForce brand, there were more than 4,360,000 posts (as of 10:30am PHT, March 1) about Leo and his win, with most of it coming from Twitter (98.6%).
Most of the conversation about Leo peaked following the announcement, with posts reaching more than 1,179,400 at about 1pm PHT, right around the time he got his trophy.
The general sentiment of the posts were neutral (86.4% of 500,000 random posts analyzed), with more positive posts (11.5%) than negative ones (2%).
Of course, the Internet, which has always been behind Leo (both in triumph and defeat), celebrated the win the only way it knows how: memes and videos.
During the Red Carpet event, it seemed that Rose never let go of Jack, as Leo served as Kate Winslet’s date to the awards show. Netizens went crazy when Leo won and the camera caught Kate’s reaction.
Twitter had the most fun with Leo’s win, though.

‘Global Warming is Real’
In his acceptance speech, DiCaprio took the opportunity to thank the entire cast and crew of The Revenant, his friends and loved ones. He also used the moment to shine the spotlight on global warming.
“Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow,” said the 41-year-old actor.
"Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this. For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed.” he continued.
"I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take this night for granted," he ended, to applause from the audience at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
He later tweeted:
#ClimateChange action starts w/ electing leaders who'll make brave & vital changes needed to save our planet. Visit https://t.co/PWFl863hdq

In 1993, Leo received an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He received nominations for Best Actor in a Lead Role for his performance in The Aviator (2005), Blood Diamond (2007), and The Wolf of Wall Street (2014). He was also a producer in The Wolf of Wall Street, which was nominated for Best Picture.
Congrats, Leo!
