Philippine Historical Association hosts Independence Day fora on film and history

Philippine Historical Association (PHA) President Dr. Ma. Luisa Camagay and the board of trustees invite historians, researchers, history/social science educators and the interested public to the 2023 PHA Independence Day Colloquium with the theme “MAMULAT KA'T BUMANGON: 125 years of Independence and Nationhood on Film and Television” on June 7, 2023, 8:30 – 5:30 PM at the historic Metropolitan Theater in Ermita, Manila.

This PHA event is co-sponsored by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts ,and is a commitment to the Local Historical Committees Network in celebration of the the 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood.

The keynote address will be delivered by filmmaker and film historian Dr. Clodualdo “Doy” del Mundo, lecturer at the De La Salle University, on the topic “MAMULAT KA'T BUMANGON: 125 years of Independence and Nationhood on Film and Television.”

Other speakers will be Ian Christopher Alfonso of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines to talk about “Nasyonalismo sa Pelikula Noong Dekada ng Sentenyal, 1988-1998”; Prof. Alvin Campomanes of the University of the Philippines Manila on “Mga Talâ at Pagninilay sa Historiopotiya: Ang Pedagóhikal na Potensyal ng Pelíkula at Dokumentaryong Histórikal;” and Prof. Michael Charleston “Xiao” Chua of the De La Salle University who will discuss “Si Andres Bonifacio at ang Pagsilang ng Bansa sa mga Piling Pelikula at Teleserye, 2012-2023.”

The main highlight of the afternoon session is the showing of the film SUPREMO, starring Quezon City Councilor Alfred Vargas as Andres Bonifacio, directed by Richard V. Somes and produced by Alternative Vision Cinema, Inc. in 2012.
