DOST to hold APMP Mid-Year Meetings and Int’l Symposium on Metrology Awareness in Clean Water

Measurements play a vital role in food and water safety, global trade and industries, and medical applications, among others. Accuracy and traceability of measurements ensure the quality of life and help raise the standard of living.

Experts from around the world in the field of metrology — the study of measurements — gather annually to discuss scientific advancements and plan strategic directions for the community.

This year, the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP), a regional organization which the Philippines is a part of, will hold its Mid-Year Meeting in Mactan, Cebu on June 17 to 21, 2019.

This is the third time that the Philippines will be hosting the event with the first and second held in Tagaytay in 2006 and in Manila in 2010, respectively.

Among the highlights of the week-long event is the International Symposium on Metrology in Clean Water and NMI-Stakeholder Engagement Workshop organized by the National Metrology Laboratory and DOST Region VII on June 20, 2019, Thursday, at the JPark Island Resort and Waterpark.

Representatives from NIST (USA), PTB (Germany), NMIA (Australia), NMIJ (Japan), KRISS (Korea), NIM (China) and other metrological institutes will be present. Some delegates will be conducting lectures, along with speakers from the World Health Organization and Department of Health, on current issues, practices, and trends on the requirements for clean water.

The June 20 symposium is an opportunity for water-testing laboratories, regulatory bodies, academic institutions and water providers and concessionaires to raise concerns regarding metrological traceability in clean water measurements such as acquisition of reference materials and participation in accuracy-based proficiency testing schemes.

As registration is free, a maximum of two (2) participants from relevant institutions are invited to attend.
