The Goethe-Institut Philippinen in cooperation with PEJOCON (The Peace and Conflict Journalism Network) launches a part 2 of last year’s photography workshop and competition entitled Climate Change: “Be Aware, Take Care”. This year, the three winners plus three other participants will once again meet with the jury – seasoned photographers Veejay Villafranca, Charlie Saceda, and German photojournalist Andy Spyra – to shoot and document Tacloban a half year after the Yolanda tragedy.

The participants will do a fieldwork in and around Tacloban supervised by the jury. The aim is to create a visually compelling story in the areas devastated by Typhoon Yolanda with the theme of rebuilding, reconstruction, disaster preparedness and moving on. On June 15, the last day of the fieldwork, the participants are expected to give a presentation of what they’ve documented. The output of the fieldwork is planned to be exhibited in Manila next year.

The Climate Change: “Be Aware, Take Care” project started last year as a project of the Goethe-Institut in partnership with PECOJON, SMX Convention Center Manila, and Canon. Fifteen amateur photographers were selected out of dozens of entries from all over the country to participate in a photography workshop in Manila. The three winners of Canon cameras were announced earlier this year and were invited together with 3 others to do the follow-up fieldwork in Tacloban. The six come from different parts of Luzon and Mindanao.

After typhoon Yolanda (which landed in the Philippines just before the photography workshop), organizers of the project felt the need to do a follow-up project and bring the photographers to the Visayas not only to help them further the skills they learned the first time around, but also to help promote awareness about the tragedy and the lessons of climate change.

The Tacloban fieldwork will kick off with the awarding of last year’s winners on the evening of June 8, 2014 at the Granda Manor in Tacloban City.
