JCI Philippines Awards this Year’s Outstanding Young Men and Women


The Junior Chamber International Philippines together with TOYM Foundation and the Gerry Roxas Foundation concluded the much awaited search for 2013 The Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines. This year’s TOYM Search Committee gathered nominations from all over the Philippines submitted by individuals and organizations. This year-long search led by JCI Senator Luciano Frederick Puyod III, 2013 National Chairman for TOYM Search, brought out nine winners from different categories. Nominations were screened by a panel composed of past TOYM honorees chaired by Atty. Theodore O. Te, 2002 Awardee for Human Rights/ Legal Aid with members:   Mr. Dennis B. Mendiola, Dr. Maria Corazon De Ungria, Mr. Jose Roberto A. Alampay, Mr. Edgar J. Sia II, and Ms. Therese “Gang” T. Badoy. Winners were selected by distinguished board of Judges presided by the Chairman of the Philippine Stock Exchange, Mr Jose T. Pardo, with members: Mr. Ryan Cayabyab, Dr. Benjamin E. Diokno, Hon. Marvic Mario Victor F. Leonen, Mr Napoleon L. Nazareno, Fr. Anton C.T. Pascual, and Congresswoman Maria Leonor Gerona-Robredo. This year’s TOYM Honourees are: 1. EMERSON ATANACIO (Social Entrepreneurship) Emer is the President and CEO of the National College of Science and Technology.  At the age of 23, he became the youngest President & CEO of a college in the Philippines.  He is called the Father of Manufacturing and Production Technology Education and he was able to copyright the programs under IPO.  He believes that this program can be an effective tool for national progress by helping alleviate poverty.  Over 10,000 trainees, including school leavers from different parts of the country, have benefited from his program.  The youth were able to go back to school and be part of the productive mainstream of our society.       2. JUNE CHERYL CABAL-REVILLA (Community Service) Despite her success in the corporate world, Chaye’s heart remains in the right place.  She and her friends decided to give back to the community. Others call it an act of kindness or generosity or volunteerism. But Chaye calls it Gabay Guro.  Gabay Guro aims at furthering education for nation-building by supporting the overall development of teachers in the country.  Core programs include the granting of scholarships and trainings nationwide; providing tribute cards and events; providing livelihood and housing for teachers; providing computers, classrooms and broadbanding and connectivity to public schools.  She has labored for Gabay Guro to be able to give scholarships to 700 aspiring teachers and conduct training that have benefited over 40,000 teachers.   3. NICOLE PAULA CURATO (Sociology) Nicole Curato holds a unique track record of successfully combining teaching, scholarly research and public engagement at the age of 30.  UP students have consistently ranked her as “among the best” professors in the University for her democratic teaching style that encourages engagement and reflection among the youth.  As a young Filipino public intellectual, Nicole conveys the most inspiring voice of her generation. She promotes democratic literacy through initiatives such as UP’s Fact Check project in the last elections as well as her illuminating pieces, including those on political dynasties and the ethics of citizenship in a post-Haiyan world. Her style of commentary is responsible, evidence-based and nuanced—the type of voice necessary in today’s political conversation.   4. CUSTER DEOCARIS (Science Communications) One of the country’s most published young scientists, he has authored and co-authored 79 local and international scientific publications, including a dozen invited expert review papers; with numerous research and publication awards, his immense body of scientific work defines his talent for high-level research and innovation. His work on immortalization, aging and mortalin/GRP75 has yielded a patent for peptide vaccines and other molecular interventions that can manipulate aging and cancer-formation.   As a broadcaster, Dr. Deocaris tackles cutting-edge and relevant science while being understood by the man on the street.  He is the Founder of the NGO, Luntiang Lunes, the local chapter of Meatless Monday.  He is also a reporter for Herald News.   5. MIGUEL RENE DOMINGUEZ (Government & Public Service) At 26, he ran for governor in Sarangani in 2004. He turned 27 during the campaign period and quickly shed off his corporate executive image to become one of the most effective young rising politicians in Mindanao by winning on a platform of good governance and committed public service. He won over a graft-ridden set of officials and gave Sarangani and its residents a fresh start.  Known as Sarangani’s son, he almost singlehandedly put Sarangani on the national map as an investment and tourism destination by rallying residents, involving the participation of indigenous people in local governance and engaging armed combatant of Moro rebels in peace dialogues.   6. ALONZO GABRIEL (Food Science & Technology) Al is an Associate Professor and University Scientist at UP Diliman.  A food science and technology educator, researcher and community extension worker/ public servant.  By waiving patents and proprietary rights to his research findings, Dr Gabriel’s works become readily available for use by the food industry, particularly by the micro and small scale enterprises that have limited R&D capabilities.  He works with other government agencies such as the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Product Standards to disseminate key concepts and information in food safety, defense and security to farmers, fisher folks, and small scale food processors.   7. KARL MICHAEL REYES (Medicine) Dr Reyes has helped establish the first private Center for Congenital Heart Disease in the country at St Luke’s Medical Center.  He leads the Gift of Life International program in the Philippines. Gift of Life is an international organization that provides treatment for patients with Congenital Heart Disease through development of locally based programs and also by conducting international training missions. Dr Reyes also established the Operation Heart Foundation Inc; that helps patients by coordinating medical and surgical treatment as well as placing donor funding for each patient.     8. PAOLO ANTONIO SILVA (Medicine) Dr Silva directs the efforts of the Joslin Vision Network, an innovative telemedicine-enabling technology developed at Beetham Eye Institute of the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School, that is incorporated in a multidisciplinary approach through a comprehensive diabetes management program.  He led the establishment of the first Teleophthalmology program for diabetic retinal disease in the Philippines at the Medical City and is currently the Co-Director of the Program. This program has now provided care and prevented visual loss in hundreds of Filipinos. 9. CHRISTOPHER JOHN ALANDY DY TIU (Youth Leadership Development) Chris is a professional basketball player and currently plays for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).  He is formerly a member and team captain of the Philippine National Team, Smart Gilas from 2008 to 2012.  Chris is also an entrepreneur, TV host, product endorser, civil servant and part owner of Happy Lemon, Tampopo & Eric Kayser bakery.  Chris Tiu channeled his celebrity status to help form values of today’s Filipino youth. He championed timeless values like hard work, modesty, honesty, perseverance and sacrifice through face to face interactions, sports, media and social media. This year’s theme “INSPIRING A NATION OF HEROES” has brought out great winners in this year’s search. TOYM Awards recognize these nine outstanding individuals who, beyond concern, have brought service to others, beyond their talent exuded excellence, beyond their position shone leadership and beyond their achievement have grown greatness.  The honourees are true models of exceptional young Filipinos worth emulation by the young generation.
