Free admission to National Museum on Saturday in honor of Intl Museum Day

The National Museum of the Philippines' National Art Gallery building
In solidarity with the worldwide community of museums, the National Museum of the Philippines will open its doors to the public for free on Saturday, May 18, in commemoration of International Museum Day. Established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, International Museum Day aims to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. This year’s theme, “Museums (memory + creativity) = social change” highlights the need to reconcile the traditional mission of preservation with the challenge of cultivating the creativity and vitality necessary for renewal and visitor growth. In 2012, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with almost 32,000 museums hosting events in more than 129 countries.

Juan Luna's magnificent "Spoliarium" is the centerpiece of the National Art Gallery's Masters Hall.
May is also National Heritage Month and to highlight this celebration, the National Museum will be unveiling the exhibit, “Eskultor ng Bagong Lahi,” honoring the life and works of National Artist Guillermo Tolentino, with ceremonies to be held on May 30 at the Security Bank Hall of the Old Legislative Building (also known as the National Art Gallery). The National Museum of the Philippines is located along P. Burgos Drive, Rizal Park, Manila. Regular museum hours are from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesdays to Sundays. Visit its website here.
