Ateneo, Syspro’s academic alliance to be integrated in DISCS curriculum
This coming school year, the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science will be integrating in its curriculum the SYSPRO Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) suite, a software that enhances business management and planning processes, to further support the growing demand of qualified IT professionals in the manufacturing and distribution industry.

Under the partnership of Ateneo and Epictech Inc. (the business solutions provider that distributes the SYSPRO ERP Suite.), about 70 junior and senior Computer Science Program students will benefit from this alliance. The ERP solution will train the students in Supply chain, e.Net, VBScripting, crystal reports and executive dashboards. With the additional knowledge and exposure on enterprise systems, students will have added competence in the IT world.

Dr. Proceso Fernandez, Chair of the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science, said that the alliance with SYSPRO will give the students a “real world experience” they can use in their future careers.
“For me, especially when they’re around these title systems, it actually helps the students develop systems thinking, which is very critical to the current trend right now,” Fernandez said.
The Computer Science Program of the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS) is the first and only Computer Science program in the country that has Level 4 status, the highest accreditation given by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU). The department is a Center of Excellence declared by the Commission on Higher Education (Ched).
SYSPRO’S Academic Alliance Program supports educational institutions by providing solutions that can be used as teaching tools. For the past 10 years, Syspro has been working in strategic global alliance with educational institutions all over the world including South Africa, Kenya, and Canada. The Ateneo de Manila University was chosen as the first in Asia for their Academic Alliance Program.

Francene John Alcordo, Director of Operations of Epictech Inc. said that Information Technology (IT) plays an important role in the world today. “Organizations and businesses are able to operate more effectively because of IT. Individuals are more empowered because of IT. There is more demand globally for a more technologically literate workforce such that over the past few years, educational institutions worldwide have started integrating more IT into their academic curriculums to prepare students for their future careers,” Alcordo said.
“The goal here is that students are exposed to specific skills and knowledge using industry established best practices necessary to support the growing demand for qualified professionals in these fields,” Alcodro added.
Third year Computer Science major Diane Chua acknowledged the growing demand for IT in the field of business. “I think now, in this world, technology is really important, especially in business. The trend for business now is that it’s becoming paperless,” Chua said. She also said students will have better job opportunities because of this new opportunity.
