History Comes Alive! presents 'Doble Kara'

Ayala Museum is known as both an art and history museum. The permanent exhibitions such as The Diorama Experience, the maritime vessels, and the Crossroads of Civlizations exhibitions on the fourth floor galleries where permanent displays on pre-colonial gold, 18th to 19th-century Philippine costumes and trade vessels from China and Southeast Asia are complemented by exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, as well as by traveling exhibitions from various countries.
This 3 December, 2011, on his fourth and last lecture of the season, Dr. Ocampo discusses ways Dr. Jose Rizal is represented in art and monuments in "Doble Kara," 3 PM at the Ayala Museum lobby.

The Rizal Monument in the Luneta erected in Manila early in the last century is an iconic image, close to the spot where Rizal was shot, close to ground-zero or the geographic navel of the Philippines. The monument is so familiar, Filipinos tend to see but not notice it. Revisiting the story behind the monument from its origin in Switzerland to Manila and reviewing the bloody history of Luneta or  Rizal Park we catch a glimpse of the strange ways Rizal is re-presented in art and history.
Ambeth R. Ocampo is Chairman of the Department of History, Ateneo de Manila University and is a widely read columnist. He served as Chairman at the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (2002-2011) and concurrently Chairman at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (2005-2007).
