"Give us back the Statue of Liberty," saad ni French Euro-deputy center-left politician na si Raphael Glucksmann, sa ginanap na kombensiyon ng Place Publique center-left movement.
"We're going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: 'Give us back the Statue of Liberty,'" sabi pa ni Glucksmann sa kaniyang mga tagasuporta.
"We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home," dagdag niya.
Pinasinayaan ang Statue of Liberty sa New York City harbor noong October 28, 1886 para sa centennial ng American Declaration of Independence, bilang regalo ng mga mamamayan ng France sa Amerika.
Idinisenyo ng Frenchman na si Auguste Bartholdi ang estatwa, na batay sa mga datos ay may taas na 151 feet.
May katulad na mas maliit na estatwa ang France na makikita sa isla ng Seine sa Paris.
Kilala si Glucksmann na tagasuporta ng Ukraine, na bumabatikos kay US President Donald Trump dahil sa pagbabago ng polisiya nito sa ginagawang pag-atake ng Russia sa Ukraine.
Pinuna rin niya ang pagbabawas ni Trump ng suporta sa US research institutions, na dahilan para hikayatin ng French government ang ilang dalubhasa na sa kanila magtrabaho.
"The second thing we're going to say to the Americans is: 'if you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world's leading power, then we're going to welcome them,'" sabi ni Glucksmann.
Mula nang bumalik si Trump sa White House noong Enero, pinutol ng kaniyang gobyerno ang ilang federal research funding at sinibak sa trabaho ang daan-daang federal workers sa health and climate research.
