Isang human rights lawyer ang binaril at napatay, habang sugatan naman ang kaniyang driver sa Cebu City nitong Huwebes.
Sa ulat ni John Kim Bote sa Super Radyo dzBB, kinilala ang biktima na si Atty. Rex Fernandez, na agad nasawi sa kaniyang sasakyan.
Isinugod naman sa ospital ang kaniyang sugatang driver.
Nangyari ang krimen dakong 5:00 pm sa Barangay Guadalupe.
Nakaupo si Hernandez sa passenger seat sa harapan ng kotse.
Ayon sa ilang nakasaksi, tumakas ang mga salarin na nakasuot ng bonnet sakay ng motorsiklo.
Kamakailan, naging kontrobersiyal si Hernandez matapos mag-hunger strike nang putulan ng suplay ng tubig ang kanilang compound sa Mandaue.
Sa isang pahayag, kinondena ng National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) ang krimen.
“No words, indeed. Another colleague has fallen with his boots on. We had lost count. It has not stopped and every lawyer is a sitting duck,” ayon kay NUPL President Edre Olalia.
Ayon kay Olalia, kabilang si Hernandez sa founding member ng NUPL noong 2007, at ilang taon din naging abogado para sa Karapatan.
"He was passionate, intense, and brave, even as he was unique in many ways,” ani Olalia.
“Before he was silenced, he castigated the present administration which he had hitherto placed his sincere hope on would bring change. He died disillusioned that it was not meant to be. Rest in peace already Rex. You fought a good fight,” dagdag niya. --FRJ, GMA News
