Nasilayan na ang kalibre ng Pinoy pride na si Kai Sotto nang isalang sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon ng Orlando Magic sa NBA 2K24 Summer League nitong Biyernes sa (Manila time) kontra sa Portland Trail Blazers na ginanap sa Thomas & Mack Center sa Las Vegas.
Gayunman, hindi pa rin sapat ang lakas ng 7-foot-3 Filipino center matapos na yumuko ang Magic sa Trail Blazers sa iskor na 88-71.
Nagtala si Sotto ng six points, four rebounds, three blocks, at one assist. Three-for- seven ang pagbuslo niya (42.9-percent) mula sa field at may dalawang turnover.
Ipinasok si Sotto sa pagsisimula ng second period at nagmarka ng dalawang rebounds at isang block bago pinalitan sa 4:23 mark ng naturang quarter.
Ibinalik siya sa huling bahagi ng third quarter at doon nagtala ng kaniyang puntos. Nasundan pa ang iskor ni Sotto sa fourth quarter pero kontrolado na ng Blazers tempo ng laro.
'Good first game'
Sa kabila ng pagkatalo sa Blazers, masaya si Sotto na nakapaglaro na siya at naipakita ang kaniyang kakayanan sa harap sa mga NBA scouts at coaches.
"It’s a good first game, just to go out there and compete. We didn’t win but we learned a lot from this game. I think we did pretty good defensively. We just got to bounce back," sabi ng Pinoy cager sa panayam matapos ang laban.
"It’s nice to finally go out there and play," patuloy niya.
Inilahad din ni Sotto ang natutunan niya sa pagiging bahagi ng Summer League.
"I think the game in the Summer League is just more fast-paced. Everybody’s trying to prove that they can play in an NBA game and the environment is pretty fast-paced," saad niya.
Nais ni Sotto na patindihan pa ang kaniyang lakas sa depensa gaya nang ginawa niyang tapal sa Trail Blazers guard na si Shaedon Sharpe.
"Obviously, I’m one of the tallest players out there so I gotta help my team and protect the paint when I’m in there," sabi ng 21-anyos na si Sotto.
"Offensively, you know, it will come to me. I’m a good teammate so I’m really a willing passer for a big guy so I’m just gonna let the game come to me offensively but defensively, that’s where I’m doing my work," pahayag niya.
Nagpapasalamat si Sotto sa Philippine basketball community na patuloy na sumusuporta sa kaniya na maabot ang pangarap na maging first homegrown talent na makapasok sa NBA.
"It feels good, obviously, to anybody that’s playing. To have a lot of guys cheering for you, it’s a blessing," ani Sotto.
"For me, it’s just to do my part to show my 100-percent effort every game so hopefully I’ll make them happy and proud," dagdag niya.—FRJ, GMA Integrated News
