NCAA Season 100

Chris Hubilla registers near triple-double as Mapua downs Letran

Chris Hubilla registered a near triple-double to lead Mapua University past Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 86-78, in their second round faceoff on Friday in NCAA Season 100 at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Hubilla posted 19 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists as the Cardinals improved to 9-3. Letran, meanwhile, slipped to 6-6.

After the first half ended at a tie at 44, Mapua made an 8-0 run in the middle of the third period to claim a 55-50 lead at the 3:44 mark of the said frame. The Cardinals also made a 5-0 run to end the third quarter and take a 66-59 lead.

Mapua had its biggest lead, 77-66, with less than six minutes left in the fourth quarter before cruising onto the victory.

"Kung ano si Escamis tonight, meron namang nag-step up. Ang maganda, gumana pa rin sa depensa namin kasi nakita naman natin 'yung leader and even the bigs ng Letran ay gumana. Talagang pumukpok kami sa depensa, 'di puwedeng mag-relax," Mapua head coach Randy Alcantara said.

Aside from Hubilla, JC Recto and John Jabonete had 14 and 13 points, respectively for Mapua who were missing the services of Marc Igliane.

Jace Miller and Kobe Monje had 14 points apiece to lead the Jimboy Estrada-less Knights.

Mapua will play San Beda University on Sunday, while Letran will go against San Sebastian College-Recoletos on Tuesday.
