Peaking Mapua Lady Cardinals overcome third-set hiccup vs. San Beda for joint fourth

Mapua University restored order after dropping a close third set, cruising to a 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-11 victory over the hungry San Beda University in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Cardinals failed to get the sweep, but nonetheless emerged on top to tie San Sebastian College-Recoletos at the fourth spot with a 5-2 win-loss card. The Lady Red Spikers, meanwhile, dropped to a 0-8 slate.

Raissa Ricablanca led the four-set triumph with 19 points built on 16 attacks and three blocks while Freighanne Garcia churned out 16 markers and five receptions as Mapua extended its winning streak to five after opening the tourney with back-to-back losses.

Mapua was on its way to securing its second sweep victory this season after Garcia made something out of a broken play and forced a 22-all deadlock in the third set.

But Kat Moline spoiled the party for Mapua, unleashing a cross attack from the opposite side and serving a heavy ace to send the game to a fourth set.

The Lady Cardinals then made certain that there won't be another extension with Garcia taking advantage of a scrambling San Beda defense with a power kill for a 14-4 lead in the fourth.

Back-to-back San Beda errors sent Mapua to a sizable 23-7 cushion before Tere Manalo's quick attack in between two defenders had them marching to the match point at 24-9.

Former Best Middle Blocker Nicole Ong unleashed a quick attack to finish it off for the surgung Lady Cardinals.

Reyann Cañete paced San Beda with a team-high 16 points while Molina chimed in with 13 markers laced with five digs.
