Arellano University has written to the NCAA volleyball committee an inquiry regarding an old rule that disallows a head coach to handle teams from the amateur and professional ranks simultaneously.
Peter Cayco, Arellano's representative to the NCAA Management Committee, confirmed the development to GMA News Online on Saturday.
"We have written a letter to the NCAA inquiring because as to our knowledge, being the head coach of one NCAA team and a professional team is not allowed. They have to give up one," Cayco said while referring to the case of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde head coach Jerry Yee, who also serves as ZUS Coffee head coach in the PVL.
"The school found out that he is both the head coach of CSB and ZUS Coffee which is a professional team in the PVL, that's why we're inquiring if it's allowed,” Cayco added.
In last year's NCAA Season 99, Yee along with Roger Gorayeb of San Sebastian College-Recoletos and Arellano men's team's Sherwin Meneses were listed as coaches despite also handling pro teams. Gorayeb is the current head coach of Capital1 while Meneses calls the shots for champion team Creamline on top of his duties as the new head coach of National University in the UAAP.
But in the ongoing season, Gorayeb is listed as an assistant coach while his former deputy Clint Malazo has been elevated as head coach. Meneses, meanwhile, is currently a consultant for the Chiefs with Bryan Vitug taking over the reins as head coach.
Asked why the inquiry was only made this season, Cayco said he was asked by their university president regarding the rule.
Cayco, though, clarified that he is unsure of what the possible steps or consequences may be after the inquiry.
"I am not sure but ineligible players, if they play, they forfeit the game. I don't know the treatment when it comes to coaches," Cayco added.
Cayco also clarified that if there is a possible forfeiture, then it will only affect games this season and not the previous ones, meaning the past three titles of the Lady Blazers will stand.
A memorandum to comment on the inquiry was already sent to Arellano and Benilde. The volleyball committee, composed of University of Perpetual Help System DALTA's Frank Gusi and Colegio de San Juan de Letran's Fr. Vic Calvo, OP will meet on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
Cayco, also a member of the committee, said he has inhibited from the said inquiry.
