Colegio de San Juan de Letran wasted no time imposing its dominance in the NCAA Season 100 women's beach volleyball tournament after surging to a 2-0 start on Tuesday at the SBMA Sand Court in Subic, Zambales.
The defending champions Lady Knights, bannered by team captain Lare Mae Silva and sisters Gia and Jogi Maquilang, picked up a pair of sweep victories against San Sebastian College-Recoletos and Mapua University to open their bid for a rare three-peat feat.
The Maquilang sisters displayed great connection against the Lady Cardinals, breaking a 9-all deadlock with three straight points capped by a service ace from reigning Rookie MVP Gia.
They then turned it to a comfortable 16-11 separation after an underhand attack from Jogi before Mapua crawled back with a 5-4 run behind the duo of Raina Vergino and Frances Macatangay, 20-16.
Gia then went for a solid one-two attack to stop Mapua's momentum and seal the victory for the Lady Knights.
Meanwhile, Lyceum of the Philippines University and Arellano University also went unbeaten on the opening day with similar 2-0 cards.
The Lady Pirates banked on Hiromi Osada, Stacey Lopez, and Monna Bañares in pulling off a 21-12, 21-10 win against Emilio Aguinaldo College and 21-15, 21-13 victory against San Beda University.
The Lady Chiefs shrugged off a second set hiccup en route to a 21-13, 13-21, 15-6 win over Jose Rizal University before they ended the day with another triumph, this time with a 21-17, 21-12 sweep win past San Sebastian.
