Mapua University continued its hot surge in the NCAA Season 98 women’s volleyball tournament after hacking out a 25-23, 27-25, 21-25, 25-23 victory over slumping Jose Rizal University on Wednesday.

Mapua booked its third straight win to go 3-1 while JRU, a part of last season’s Final Four cast, slipped to 0-4.

The Lady Cardinals had the chance to sweep the Lady Bombers but Mapua wasted a four-point lead early on but a net error from their side gave JRU the set point, 24-22, before Batara’s block sealed the third set for the Bombers.

A JRU service error sent Mapua to the second technical timout enjoying a 16-12 cushion in the fourth before back-to-back attack errors from both Riza Rose and Mae Ruiz saw Mapua’s lead go up to 23-20.

Chenie Batac, a usual starter but rode the bench for most of the game, delivered the match point from the opposite side. Manalo nailed the game-winning point as Mapua, for the first time this season, didn’t figure in a five-setter.
