EAC finds groove vs LPU, clinches breakthrough NCAA Season 97 win

Emilio Aguinaldo College's efforts didn't go for naught this time after the Lady Generals sealed a 26-28, 25-15, 27-25, 25-17 victory over Lyceum of the Philippines University for its first win in the NCAA Season 97 women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

After a series of heartbreakers the past games, EAC now improved to 1-5 to forge a tie with Colegio de San Juan de Letran at the cellar. LPU, meanwhile, dropped to an even 3-3 card.

The Lady Generals were consistent right from the get-go but an extended first frame saw the Lady Pirates dominate with a 28-26 victory with rookie Johna Dolorito steadying the ship.

EAC continued to pound on Lyceum in the second with the duo Krizzia Reyes and Cathrine Almazan leading the team to a convincing 25-25 win to tie it all up to a set apiece.

It looked like Lyceum was on the driver's seat in the third frame, igniting for a 4-0 spurt after being down by one point, 21-18. But EAC countered with a furious 6-1 run of its own to take the lead and the set point, 24-22.

Dolorito forced another tie at 25 but an error from her handed EAC the set, 27-25.

EAC then raced to a quick 16-9 cushion in the fourth as Lyceum never threatened a comeback, giving the Lady Generals their maiden win this season.

Reyes had another stellar output, scattering 24 points to go along with 13 digs and six excellent receptions while Almazan chipped in 14 markers to steer EAC to the win. Over at Lyceum, Jewel Maligmat had 16 and Dolorito finished with 14 but those weren't enough as they fell short.

Tied at the bottom of the standings, EAC and Letran will go head-to-head on Saturday while Lyceum will look to bounce back on Sunday against Mapua University.
