JRU recovers from one set down, edges Letran in NCAA Season 97 debut

Jose Rizal University bucked a slow start to forge a 13-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 comeback victory against Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the NCAA Season 97 women’s volleyball tournament on Tuesday.

After a lackluster opening set, JRU got down to business in the second frame with team captain Dolly Verzosa, Riza Rose, and lefty hitter Renesa Melgar steadying the ship for the Lady Bombers.

 

 

An ace from Verzosa made it a 16-12 affair for JRU before Rose found a hole at the back for a slim 23-22 lead. Letran’s Shereena Urmenata then commiitted an attack error for JRU’s set point before setter Jerry Lyn Laurente finished it off with an ace of her own.

The third set saw JRU became more synchronized inside the taraflex.

A 4-0 unanswered run led by Verzosa and Melgar gave JRU a huge 22-13 cushion in the frame. Letran tried to steal some momentum but team captain Cha Cuñada mishit her service for JRU’s set point, 17-24.

Mary May Ruiz then went off over two blockers to give JRU a commanding 2-1 lead, 25-17.

Letran again tried to mount a fightback but JRU charged with a 6-1 barrage for an 19-12 lead in the fourth set.

An error from both sides capped off the match as JRU booked ita first win.

JRU next tangles with Emilio Aguinaldo College on Friday while Letran tackles University of Perpetual Help System DALTA on the same day.
