Rise Up Stronger

How volleyball helped San Sebastian’s Shane Requierme spike her way through life

Shane Requierme of the San Sebastian College-Recoletos volleyball program shared on 'Rise Up Stronger: The Road to NCAA Season 96' that as a child, she experienced an inferiority complex, where she constantly felt inadequate.

But when introduced to volleyball, the spiker learned to step out of her comfort zone and embrace new things.

“I developed it when I was a child but I did not take it as a negative thing. I took it as a motivation and inspiration,” she shared on Sunday.

“When I entered high school, that’s when I realized that I needed to step out of my comfort zone. That’s also the time that I met volleyball.”

Her childhood experiences were also the reason why Requierme started her advocacy about mental health awareness.

The 2019 Ms. San Sebastian added that as a psychology major herself, she wanted people to be knowledgeable about mental health, which she asserted is as important as physical health.

“I use my platform to raise awareness. Actually, there are a lot of support groups in the Philippines that we can reach out,” she said.

“Mental disorder isn’t only about depression.”
