Letran's Matt Obiena rules NCAA pole vault; JRU's John Dave Puno sets new NCAA record in 100m run

Colegio de San Juan de Letran's Matt Obiena, a cousin of pole vaulter and Olympian EJ Obiena, is making his own name in pole vaulting after winning gold in the sport's seniors event in the NCAA Season 100 track and field tournament on Sunday at the New Clark City.

Obiena cleared 4.10 meters to claim gold and top more than 15 athletes in competition.

In other competitions, John Dave Puno of Jose Rizal University set a new NCAA record in the men's 100m run at 10.56 seconds, while Alfredo Pineda of University of Perpetual Help System DALTA bagged the gold in juniors with 10.73 seconds.

Alvin Lopez  of Arellano University topped the long jump final with 7.07 meters, while MJ Lloyd Lora of San Beda University bagged the gold in the said event's junior division with 6.89 meters.

Dominic Woodard of Jose Rizal University ruled the discus throw seniors event with 43.13 meters, while Marc Merceds of San Beda dominated the juniors event with 41.56 meters. Edzel Baritua of San Sebastian College-Recoletos, meanwhile, logged 6:14.56 to rule the 2000m steeplechase.

The NCAA track and field tournament will run until Tuesday.
