Just like sports such as basketball and volleyball, chess too requires a certain level of stamina and fitness.
Take it from Lyceum of the Philippines University chess players Lance Vincent Venzer and Jhoemar Mendiogarin who both said that their varsity team's physical training is an important part of developing endurance for their chess games.
"The endurance is important because there's a certain point where you would feel exhausted," Venzer said on 'Rise Up Stronger: The Road to NCAA Season 96' on Thursday.
"So that's also the reason why we have endurance training for us to stay in the game for a long time."

According to Venzer, who is currently studying Information Technology, there would be times where they've had to sit for four to six hours in one game and for them, that's a natural occurrence when you're into chess.
They shared that their team would engage in activities such as jogging and basketball, which had benefits not only for their physical fitness, but in other aspects as well.
"We jog every Saturday so that our endurance come the games are in check," said Mendiograin, who played for the school from 2015 to 2020. This routine served as bonding for the team as well.
"We'd also have basketball games sometimes as a team not only to improve our mental capacity but also our physical health," Venzer added.
