How did Martin Javier end up being a sportscaster? | NCAA Philippines

Martin Javier is more than just a sportscaster.

He is also one of the Kapuso Network's hosts and one of the segment anchors in GMA Integrated News' primetime newscast '24 Oras.'

But how did Martin end up in sportscasting?

It all started with his attempt to become a courtside reporter.

"Una kong audition noon [as courtside reporter] was senior po ako sa college so hindi po ako nakuha n'un. I think that was the first year na 'yung group na yun hindi sila kumuha ng guys," Martin said in podcast 'Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel.'

(I first auditioned when I was a senior in college but I was not accepted. I think it was the first year that the group of courtside reporters has no guys.)

"'Yun din po 'yung gusto kong sundan dati kasi may mga nauna sa akin na courtside reporter muna and then they progress into anchoring and commentating tapos po nung hindi ako nakuha, medyo gumuho po ang mundo [ko]."

(That's the path I would have wanted to follow because I know some courtside reporters who then progressed into anchoring, then commentating, so when I was not accepted, my world was kind of shattered.)

Martin then tried his hand in advertising in a corporate setting, but his dream of telling sports stories on television stood out for him.

He tried to audition anew but was eventually asked to anchor the NCAA.

"So I skipped the part of becoming a courtside reporter and then went straight to anchoring but it wasn't super easy," he recalled.

A year after his audition to become an anchor, he eventually got the call to be part of the broadcast team.

Years into his craft, Martin was recognized as the Best TV Sports Program Host in the 2023 Platinum Stallion National Media Awards organized by the Media and Communication Department of Trinity University of Asia.
