NCAA rubbermatch: Will Aquino’s return tilt edge to Stags? | NCAA Philippines

San Sebastian’s Jimbo Aquino is back from a one-game suspension and the Stags hope their ace gunner will tilt Monday’s knockout game for the last finals slot in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament against Jose Rizal to their favor. Aquino sat out the first meeting between the No. 2 Stags and the No. 3 Bombers in the Final Four last Friday for committing a punching foul on San Beda’s Jake Pascual in a previous playoff game.

And without Aquino, San Sebastian struggled and dropped a 72-65 loss to upset-conscious JRU. “He’s the heart and soul of the team. He would be a vital part in this game," SSC coach Ato Agustin said of Aquino, the second leading scorer in the league with over 20 points a game. JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia said they should be ready for Aquino’s return in the 3:30 p.m. you-or-me match as they bid to beat San Sebastian for the right to face the Lions in the best-of-three championship. “I must admit that our zone defense worked (the first time) because Aquino was not there. He’ll be a big problem when he returns," said Vanguardia, seeking to set a return engagement with No. 1 San Beda, which had already advanced following its 82-76 win over a Rey Guevarra-less No. 4 Letran last Friday. “If we keep on playing the way we did in the Final Four, we’ll have a strong chance of repeating against them (Stags)," the JRU mentor added.

In Friday’s upset of the Stags, the Bombers drew strength from an unlikely hero in Cameroonian John Njei. Known for his hustle and defensive plays, Njei showed his offensive facet, churning out his season-high 15 points, including a booming triple — his first in the season — to power the Bombers to the life-saving win. It was Jose Rizal’s first win over San Sebastian, which swept their two meetings in the eliminations, 91-76, last Aug. 3 and 84-78 last Oct. 7. San Sebastian hopes to bounce back from three successive losses dating back to the last game of the preliminaries, eager to thwart one more setback that would spoil what could have been a dream season that saw the team notch a record 15-straight wins. – GMANews.TV
