New member still possible for 85th season, says ’09 NCAA president

MANILA, Philippines – Incoming NCAA policy board president Fr. Matteo De Jesus, OSB, of San Beda College said they are keeping their options open as far accepting a new member for the 85th season is concern. “There will be seven teams for next season. But we’re open for future possibilities and we will gladly share it with you once we made the decision," said De Jesus, who is also SBC’s rector, during Tuesday’s turnover ceremonies held at Casa Español in Kalaw, Manila. Outgoing policy board president Dr. Reynaldo Vea of Mapua Institute of Technology turned over the NCAA flag to De Jesus and thanked all members for throwing their all-out support making the 84th season a success. De Jesus, before the turnover ceremony, the NCAA policy board and the management committee met for three hours to discuss their plans and programs, and listened to the report made by 2008-09 season host Mapua. De Jesus, however, would not discuss the important details on the meeting but gave a hint that a new team may be added for next season. “We are still looking on the technical concerns. It would be fair to everybody if we wait for a few more days before we make any announcement." Aside from the 2009 host school and Mapua, returning for the 85th season are Letran College, San Sebastian College, Jose Rizal University, College of Saint Benilde and University of Perpetual Help-Dalta System. Philippine Christian University opted to leave the NCAA but still can re-apply for new membership in the 86th season. Aside from the possibility of having new members, the NCAA is also planning to add boxing, fencing, archery and air rifle as demonstration sports in 2009-10 season. The policy board is set to meet again anytime this week where they will decide with finality on the said issues. The league opens on June 27 at the Araneta Coliseum with basketball as the first event and host San Beda seeking a fourth straight title. – GMANews.TV
